CEO Talks Series 2010
SGU, 22 Mar 2010, An evening with one of the most powerful women in Indonesia: Ibu SHANTI L. POESPOSOETJIPTO, Chairman of PT. Samudera Indonesia, and CEO of PT. Ngrumat Bondo Utomo. These companies are not business which women are normally in charge. And still, Mrs Shanti has stand at the helm of a group of family owned Indonesian companies for many years doing successful business worldwide.
Back in the 1970’s when IT was just about to emerge as an academic domain, Ibu Shanti studied electronic engineering specializing in computer science at the prestigious Technische Universität of Munich/ Germany. IT was a fascination for her father and herself. He pioneered in the 1950’s the introduction of the new computer technology to Indonesia. In all respects her father was always her mentor. But nothing was given to her for free. She had to lead the demanding life of a student in a foreign environment and build her career later.
Back in Indonesia her father gave her responsibilities in the family owned companies. Shanti led the re-engineering process within Soedarpo Corporation to focus its business in Information Technology. She oversaw the operational management of all the Information Technology related Business of PT. Ngrumat Bondo Utomo. Her career took up so much time, she could not spare any to enter an MBA program. Jokingly, she mentioned how she added all the pieces of Business Administration over ten years, what today’s MBA participants can achieve in 18 months.
What makes her family owned group of companies so successful in the second and third generation? None of the executive management enjoys privileges because he or she is a family member. It’s professional performance that counts.
Hearing first hand from a senior executive about career building and challenges to succeed in a competitive business environment was a great experience for the MBA class Batch 15. The fact, that Shanti spent an evening with students shows her commitment to the young generation, as well as supporting an excellent education. It was an event to remember.
