Andira Yuko Saputri: Challenging the youth in you

Andira Yuko Saputri recently graduated from the Communication and PR program of Swiss German University, but she has already planned an exciting career for her future. The following is my interview with her that covered her interests in becoming an entrepreneur, her memories of SGU, and her ‘pet project’ inspired by a Korean variety show.

So Dira, can you tell me what you are doing after graduation?

Well, I actually plan to run a clothing business with my friends, but I am still looking for concepts and support for this. Besides that, at the moment, my friends, who are also alumni of SGU, and I are busy producing a variety show called the Youth Challenge. This show is inspired by a Korean variety show called Running Man; however, the concept and the editing are very different from the Korean show. We are striving to be more creative and innovative.

That’s interesting. How did you come up with the idea of making the Youth Challenge series?

Actually, at first, this project was only for fun because we are all fans of the Running Man. However, after we played it, we felt that it could be something more serious. Therefore, we decided to produce a non-commercial variety show or an indie variety show that could be an inspiration for other young people and, at the same time, a show that could entertain the audiences. JOY Magazine Indonesia’s Visit to SGU

joy-02-12-2011-022 Students and lecturers of SGU’s Communication and Public Relations Department got a chance to get an inside view into fashion and lifestyle journalism when a complete team of JOY Magazine Indonesia visited SGU last Friday (December 2, 2011).

While most people think that the life of fashion and lifestyle journalists is about partying with celebrities, attending fashion shows, obtaining latest gimmicks from premium brands and traveling in hip places, the magazine editorial team assured that this is just one part of their life. “In fact, our life is full of hard work,” said Intan Iskandar, the chief editor of the JOY Magazine Indonesia, asserting that fashion and lifestyle media play an important role in the fashion and lifestyle business across the globe.

The JOY magazine editors also explained in detail about the pre-production and production of the magazine. The Indonesian JOY magazine, a franchise of the German JOY magazine, was launched in Indonesia in June this year and is published by the DestinAsian media group.

Apart from the Journalism seminar, the beauty team from Etude House, a famous Korean cosmetics brand, gave a mini beauty course, showing how to put on healthy, simple yet stylish make up for day and night in just 10 minutes. (–> view photos of the event)

PR for Business Leaders and Entrepreneurs

The importance of Public Relations for businesses in Indonesia is increasing at a significant rate. This is particularly true for digital PR. Consequently, the potential for work in the PR industry is enlarged for the graduates of communication and business schools. Dian Noeh Abubakar – a partner in Kennedy Voice & Berliner – stated this in her sharing with the CommPR and IBA students and lecturers on Wednesday, 30 November 2011 at Swiss German University.

Dian shared her experiences working for various clients in the Indonesian PR industry. She highlighted the changes in the PR industry of Indonesia from the early years of merely voicing the client’s opinion through to today’s PR that highly values the participation of the audience. The latter has been increasingly valuable due to the advancement of technology of new media and ICTs in the society. Dian also noted that if in the past it was all about paid advertising, nowadays, PR’s role is seen as a favorable alternative where one would try to get free publication in the media by influencing journalists to cover a story about the products or services through various means.

Personal PR is also increasingly important to boost the image of high profile people such as sportsmen or politicians. By increasing their digital presence in social media, they can see in real time what the public’s opinion is of them and can then immediately address the issue. Dian is confident that the role of social media may grow even bigger in the future but it does not mean that conventional PR no longer has any place in the industry. It would really depend on the client’s need and this focus on the client’s need is one of the things that the graduates should be able to understand before entering the workplace.
