MoU between Faculty of Life Sciences - SGU and Research Center for Marine and Fisheries Product Processing and Biotechnology - Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries
On April 19, 2010, a MoU was signed between SGU and the Research Center for Marine and Fisheries Product Processing and Biotechnology (Balai Besar Riset Pengolahan Produk dan Bioteknologi Kelautan dan Perikanan / BBRP2B-KP). The Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences, Dr.rer.nat. Maruli Pandjaitan, and the Head of BBRP2B-KP, Prof. Dr. Hari Eko Irianto, signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions for research and product development.
In line with the MoU, SGU and BBRP2B-KP will develop a pilot plant of refined carrageenan production. Carrageenan, a seaweed product of Eucheuma cottonii, is widely used in many processes as a gelling and thickening agent in many processed foods, medicines, cosmetics, paints and thousands of commercial and industrial products in the world’s markets. Indonesia, as the world's biggest seaweed producer, does not have the capability to process the raw material into a highly refined carrageenan product, and to fulfill industry’s needs, refined carrageenan is still imported.
