MIT & MME Departments Held a General Assembly Event

Master of Information Technology (MIT) and Master of Mechanical Engineering (MME) of Swiss German University held an event entitled General Assembly on Saturday, 23 February 2019 at SGU campus The Prominence Tower, Alam Sutera. There were 2 (two) main agenda during the event, namely the academic discourse and orientation day. The academic discourse on “Global Economic Dynamic, Trade Wars, and Their Impact on Indonesia” was delivered by Dr. phil. habil. Patrick Tim Ziegenhain from Universitӓt Trier, Germany.

In the academic discourse, Dr. Patrick explained about the effects of trade wars on the global economy. He said that in general the growth of global economy is currently still good, although not as good as in the past. But this economy trend might change due to trade wars. In short term, trade wars can increase the economy of a country, but in the long run protectionism and isolation which are the effects of trade wars, will crimp the economy. Trade wars happened because of a zero-sum game perspective, where the winner takes all. Dr. Ziegenhain proposed that for the benefit of all, the perspective should be changed. The countries should be content to have a little bit less economic growth in order that the whole world can have a growth.

For Indonesia, Dr. Ziegenhain believes that trade wars will not have a very big impact since Indonesia’s economy is not yet very exposed to the outside economy. Nevertheless, Indonesia has to be aware about the current changes since Indonesia is not isolated.

The Vice Rector for Academic Affair, Dr. Irvan S. Kartawiria, S.T., M.Sc. and the Dean of Faculty of Engineering & Information Technology, Dr. Maulahikmah Galinium, S.Kom., M.Sc. were also present and delivered their speeches during the event. The new students of MIT and MME joined the orientation day in order to get informed about anything related to their respective majors and SGU in general. “We hoped that through this event, the students of MIT and MME could gain new knowledge and perspectives related to the issue of global economy,” said Dr. Irvan.
